The nickname “Big Apple” was first coined by sportswriter John J. Fitz Gerald. It was used to symbolize that New York City was the big leagues. However, it didn’t stick until 1970, when it was reintroduced through a promotional campaign to increase tourism. It’s hard to imagine ever needing more tourist, as a whopping 60,000 travelers visit NYC each year from around the globe.

There are 800 different languages spoken in NYC, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.

New York City was the first capital of the US in 1789, however, it was short-lived, coming to a close one year later.

We are home to the first pizzeria in the United States, Lombardi’s, and you can still enjoy a hot pie at the original restaurant in Nolita, located at 32 Spring and the corner of Mott.
