Three Art Exhibitions Not to Miss

July 01, 2019

Step out of the doors of The Gregory and into a perfect Manhattan day. Head to Hauser & Wirth location in Chelsea to experience "Darkening"—Lorna Simpson's stylistic exploration of the Arctic. The haunting screen-printed images—depicted in shades of deep blues, blacks, and grays—linger in the realm between familiar and dreamlike. The exhibition achieves a peaceful portrayal of beauty and devastation. After savoring the melancholy exhibit, walk over to the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery for a seemingly straightforward show by Dana Powell, "Burner." Get up close and personal with the small, realistic canvases displayed on the vast white walls. Everyday scenes of mischievous activities such as steering a boat drunk, or wild night drives on winding roads, explore the paradox between dangerous situations carried out with good intentions. Lastly, meander to the New Museum of Contemporary of Art for Mika Rottenberg: Easy Pieces, the artist's mid-career survey. The show highlights her eccentric over-the-top video installations that mix facts and fiction in a satirical criticism of global capitalism. Squeeze in as many videos as you can before heading back to The Gregory to sip on afternoon cocktails and discuss the highlights of your day at Brendan's Bar & Grill.
